Executive Director, Medical Director and Naturopathic Physician

Dr. Opunui joined the Nā Puʻuwai ʻOhana as a part-time provider in 2017 and then later expanded his role to Medical Director in April 2020 before being appointed as Executive Director in July 2022. As a Native Hawaiian, Dr. Opunui integrates traditional views of Hawaiian health with the scientific understanding of the human body and medicine, weaving together traditional, natural, and modern medical approaches to restore health. During his leadership tenure, Nā Puʻuwai has built on its storied history and pioneered the development of an innovative Native Hawaiian Integrative Health Center providing culturally responsive, interdisciplinary primary health and traditional, complimentary and integrative medicine (TCIM), programs, and resources to the rural island communities of Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi.

In addition to his role at Nā Puʻuwai, Dr. Opunui is an adjunct professor at Chaminade University and serves as a board member of the non-profit, Hui Mauli Ola. His commitment to the integration of traditional and modern medicine extends beyond his medical practice to his academic and volunteer work, further contributing to the advancement of health and wellbeing of the Hawaiian community. 

Dr. Opunui strives to be a model of mauli ola (health and wellbeing) to his ʻohana, staff, patients, and community. He practices what he preaches and teaches, embodying the principles and practices of health and wellbeing in his daily life.

Dr. Opunui is happily married to Kumu Hula and solopreneur Kawena Opunui. They are blessed with 2 boys, Kūaliʻi and Kaula, and live a simple life in the forest of Mahinui overlooking Kāneʻohe Bay where they built their humble home on ʻohana ʻāina (family land). When Dr. Opunui is not working, teaching, volunteering or spending precious time with ʻohana, you will almost always find him in the ocean as an avid and competitive outrigger paddler.
