The History of Naturopathic Medicine in America
Naturopathic medicine made it’s way to America over 100 years ago. A combination of natural medicines and techniques from several different countries, it introduced a better way of healing that utilizes the incredible healing abilities of plants and herbs. The first school of naturopathic was opened around 1900 and graduated its first class in 1902. Naturopathic medicine became a popular choice for NDs for the next few decades until the 1940’s and 1950’s when conventional medicine was brought on the scene. Still believing in the power of natural ways of healing, naturopathic doctors fought to stay in the public’s eye and not be buried by large medical companies.
As time went on, Americans began to see the side effects some conventional medicines have and began looking for alternatives. By the 1970’s and 1980’s, naturopathic medicine had held on long enough to become more popular in the public’s eye again, and a few more colleges opened, offering more options to students wanting to practice naturopathic medicine.
Now, there are naturopaths in almost every state in America utilizing the power of naturopathic medicine with the added bonus of conventional testings, screenings, and treatments. By combining both of these incredible options, naturopathic doctors have the ability to help their patients heal on an even greater level.
The Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians was founded in 1934 during the height of naturopathic medicine to ensure the residents of Washington state had access to naturopathic medicine and naturopathic doctors. Surviving the ups and downs naturopathic medicine has gone through over the last 80 years, this is still our mission. We believe everyone should have a choice in the type of medical professional and care they want for themselves and their family and have access to that care. Find a Natural Doctor does just that by allowing you to find a naturopathic doctor near you for easy access to the naturopathic world of medicine.
